Training start and kagami biraki 2022

Tomorrow, Monday, January 10th, we meet again at our dojo at the BRG19 in Vienna-Döbling for this year’s first training. I hope to see you on the mats soon.
Please remember: 2G rule applies for all participants and will be checked regularly, kids have to show their Ninja Pass to take part.

There will be a little change in our regular training schedule too:

  • Trainings on Thursday from now on take place from 6.30-8 pm (weapons class on demand from 8-9 pm)

Save the date
On Thursday, January 20th, we will celebrate our kagami biraki (鏡開き) – the traditional new year’s ceremony -, which literally means “break the mirror” or “open the mirror”. However, for quite practical reasons, the mirror was replaced by a rather tasty round rice cake called mochi (餅). In contrast to the European view that a broken mirror is bad luck, the Japanese see it the other way around.

Therefore, this ceremony takes place not only at the beginning of the year, traditionally on January 11, but also at weddings, sporting events, opening ceremonies, etc. In the dojos or martial arts, strictly speaking, the kagami biraki also marks the first training of the year.

In addition, everyone has the opportunity to demonstrate their skills at the enbu (演武, martial arts demonstration). This is followed by the even more leisurely part with sake (酒, rice wine), some juice for the kids, and mochi for everyone.
